Gift guide

Buying a microcurrent device as a gift

This is the device category most likely to end up in a drawer, and a gift buyer has no way of knowing that from the packaging. Read this before you spend.

Three questions before you buy

  1. Do they already own one? Microcurrent devices all look broadly similar in a bathroom and a duplicate is a wasted gift. If you cannot find out, an LED mask is less likely to duplicate because they are visually distinct.
  2. Will they do it five times a week? Be honest. If the answer is probably not, a lower-cost device is a kinder gift than a flagship, because the mistake costs less.
  3. Do they have an implanted electrical device? Pacemakers and similar are a hard contraindication for microcurrent. If you do not know, do not buy one. Full contraindications.

The hidden cost

What to buy alongside it

Conductive gel. Every device needs it, every session, and most come with a small starter tube that runs out in a few weeks. A gift that arrives without a supply of gel is a gift that stops working in a month, and the recipient may not realize that the gel is the reason rather than the device.

On the NuFACE specifically: the TRINITY+ is a handle, and the Facial Trainer, Lip and Eye attachment and Wrinkle Reducer are separate purchases. Check what is in the kit you are buying rather than assuming. What the gel actually needs to be.

Safest gift overall

NuFACE MINI+

NuFACE · Best for someone new to microcurrent

Small enough that people keep using it, cleared under K191672, and priced below the flagship so a device that does not get used is a smaller mistake. The best gift in this category is the one with the lowest barrier to the second session.

The compact NuFACE: the same microcurrent family in a smaller body with fixed spheres and no attachment system.

Specifications

AttachmentsFixed spheres; no interchangeable heads
Protocol5 times a week for 60 days, then 2-3 times a week
ClearanceK191672, 15 October 2019, product code NFO
OutputLower ceiling than the TRINITY+; NuFACE does not publish a directly comparable figure

FDA clearance located

510(k) K191672 (NuFACE Mini Device, cleared 15 October 2019, applicant Carol Cole Company dba NuFACE, product code NFO).

What works

  • A located clearance in the same product code as the flagship
  • Travel size, and the one people actually keep using
  • Much lower entry cost than the TRINITY+

What does not

  • No attachment system, so no eye and lip head and no red-light head
  • Lower output ceiling and NuFACE does not publish the number
  • Smaller spheres mean a longer session to cover the same face

Specifications from FDA 510(k) K191672; NuFACE product listing, checked 13 October 2026.

Best for someone already committed

NuFACE TRINITY+

NuFACE · Best for a recipient who already does this

Up to 340 microamps published, two located clearances, two-year warranty, attachment system. The right gift for someone who already owns a MINI and uses it. The wrong gift for someone who does not.

The reference microcurrent device: swappable attachments, an app, a published microamp ceiling and the deepest clearance history in the category.

Specifications

OutputUp to 340 microamps; the Boost button adds 25 microamps
AttachmentsFacial Trainer, Effective Lip and Eye, Wrinkle Reducer (red LED)
Protocol5 times a week for 60 days, then 2-3 times a week
Warranty2 years
ClearanceK201782 device, K212947 Wrinkle Reducer attachment

FDA clearance located

510(k) K201782 (NuFace Trinity Plus Device, cleared 22 January 2021, product code NFO - over-the-counter powered facial toning). The Wrinkle Reducer attachment carries its own clearance, K212947 (2 April 2022, product code OHS).

What works

  • Publishes its actual microamp output, which most of this category refuses to do
  • Two located clearances, one for the device and one for the LED attachment
  • Two-year warranty is the longest here

What does not

  • Attachments are sold separately and add up fast
  • Needs conductive gel every session, which is a running cost
  • The app is a convenience, not a reason to buy

Specifications from NuFACE product page; FDA 510(k) K201782 and K212947, checked 13 October 2026.

Best for someone who hates cleaning things

FOREO BEAR 2

FOREO · Best for low-maintenance recipients

A sealed silicone body you can rinse under a tap. FOREO publishes no microamp figure and we could not locate a clearance for the BEAR 2 face model, so you are buying the form factor rather than the specification.

A silicone-bodied microcurrent device with a sensor that claims to detect and throttle current by skin area.

Specifications

OutputFOREO does not publish a microamp figure
BodySealed silicone, fully washable
ClearanceK200803 covers BEAR and BEAR mini; no separate BEAR 2 face record located

FDA clearance not located

FOREO's located clearances cover BEAR and BEAR mini (K200803, 31 July 2020, product code NFO) and BEAR 2 Body (K232242, 13 May 2024). We could not locate a separate record for the face BEAR 2.

What works

  • Sealed silicone body is the easiest device here to keep clean
  • The brand does hold a located clearance in this product code
  • Works with its own gel or a generic conductive gel

What does not

  • No published microamp output at all, so it cannot be compared on the one number that matters
  • No located clearance for the BEAR 2 face model specifically
  • Heavily app-dependent

Specifications from FDA 510(k) database query, applicant FOREO, 13 October 2026, checked 13 October 2026.

ZIIP Halo

ZIIP Beauty · Best for someone who enjoys an app

App-driven, 23 waveform combinations, a published current range. Check they will tolerate an account and an app, because the device is substantially less useful without both.

The app-driven device that runs nanocurrent as well as microcurrent, with a published current range that spans three orders of magnitude.

Specifications

Output900 nA to 400 microamps across up to 23 waveform combinations
Flagship routineTHE LIFT, 4 minutes
ControlTreatments are pushed from the ZIIP app
ClearanceNone located for the Halo; see K161484 and K212342 for the brand

FDA clearance not located

No 510(k) record located for the Halo specifically. ZIIP's cleared devices on file are the ZIIP Device (K161484, 24 February 2017) and ZIIP+ (K212342, 23 September 2021), both product code NFO.

What works

  • Publishes an actual current range, including the nanocurrent floor
  • The only device here that treats waveform shape as the variable
  • Four-minute flagship routine is realistically repeatable

What does not

  • No located clearance for this model
  • The device is useless without the app and an account
  • Conductive gel is proprietary and a continuing cost

Specifications from ZIIP Halo retail specification; FDA 510(k) database query, checked 13 October 2026.

Expectation setting

What not to promise when you give it

  • Not a permanent change. Stop and it fades.
  • Not a result in a week. The protocol is sixty days before assessing.
  • Not a treatment for texture, redness or pigmentation. That is LED.
  • Not a treatment for genuine sagging. That is radiofrequency.

One practical note: devices that touch the face are frequently excluded from return policies once opened, on hygiene grounds. Check the specific listing's terms before buying, because an unsuitable device can be an expensive thing to be stuck with.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Is a microcurrent device a good gift?
It can be, if the recipient will realistically do five sessions a week for the first two months. It is the most abandoned device category in home skincare, so a lower-cost model is often the kinder gift than a flagship.
Which microcurrent device should I buy as a gift?
For someone new to it, the NuFACE MINI+ (clearance K191672) - small, cleared, and the one people keep using. For someone already committed, the TRINITY+ with its published 340 microamp output and attachment system.
What else do I need to buy with it?
Conductive gel. Every microcurrent device needs it every session, and the starter tube runs out in weeks. On the NuFACE TRINITY+, check whether the attachments you want are in the kit or sold separately.
Is there anyone who should not be given one?
Anyone with an implanted electrical device such as a pacemaker. That is a hard contraindication across every manufacturer. If you do not know, choose a different gift.
