The best IPL for men: what changes with coarse hair and big areas
Chest, back and shoulders are large areas of often coarse, dense hair. That shifts which specifications matter, and it introduces one problem the marketing never mentions.

The physics
What changes with coarse hair
Coarse terminal hair contains more melanin than fine hair, which in principle means more absorption per pulse. It is also thicker and anchored more deeply, so there is more follicle to disrupt.
The practical result is that coarse hair often responds well, but may need more sessions and benefits from higher energy. This is the clearest case in the category for choosing a high-energy handset over a low-energy one - provided your skin tone suits it, which is the condition that governs everything on this site.

What to prioritize
Specifications that matter more on a larger body
- Flash rate, not flash count. The Braun's 125 flashes a minute is what makes a chest and shoulders session finish. A slow handset over a large area is a session you will abandon.
- Window size. A wide window is an advantage here, exactly the opposite of the facial case.
- Energy, for coarse hair specifically. This is where the Ulike figure earns its place.
- Cooling, because tolerating high energy over a large area for ten minutes is a different proposition from tolerating it on an upper lip for thirty seconds.
- Corded operation is fine here. Large-area sessions outlast most batteries anyway, and a cord is less annoying than a mid-session recharge.
The thing nobody mentions
The back problem
You cannot treat your own back properly. Not with a mirror, not with a long handle, not with practice. You cannot see where you have been, which means you miss patches and double-treat others.
Overlapping pulses on the same skin is exactly how burns happen, and the back is the area where you are least able to notice it happening. If your back is the main reason you are buying a handset, either you need someone else to operate it or you need a clinic. That is not a flaw in a particular device; it is geometry.
The face
Beard-line shaping, carefully
Treating a beard line or a neck line is possible below the cheekbones with a face-appropriate head. Two warnings: facial hair is often the most hormonally driven on the body, so regrowth can be faster, and IPL is permanent-ish in direction. A beard line you shape now is a beard line you may not be able to grow back the way you want in five years.
Think about that before you start, because it is the one decision in this category that is hard to reverse. Facial IPL rules in full.
In detail
Every pick, and why
No. 1 · Best for coarse hair
Ulike Air 10
Ulike · Best for dense chest and back growth
23.6 J/cm2 brand-stated is the highest published energy here, and coarse terminal hair is where that matters most. Sapphire cooling near 16-18 C makes the higher levels tolerable over a large area. Clearances K241998 and K250942, one million flashes.
The highest published energy density of the mainstream home IPL handsets, paired with sapphire contact cooling.
Specifications
| Energy | 23.6 J/cm2, brand-stated |
|---|---|
| Flashes | 1,000,000 |
| Intensity levels | 10 |
| Cooling | Sapphire contact cooling held near 16-18 C |
| Clearance | K241998 (UI20), K250942 (UI20S), product code OHT |
FDA clearance located
Ulike's UI20 family is covered by 510(k) K241998 (Ice Cooling IPL Hair Removal Device, cleared 13 December 2024, product code OHT - light-based over-the-counter hair removal), with the UI20S variants cleared under K250942 (11 July 2025).
What works
- Located, current clearances for the exact model family
- Highest brand-stated energy density here by a clear margin
- Contact cooling makes high energy levels tolerable, which is the whole point of high energy
What does not
- Energy density is brand-stated and not independently verified
- Like every IPL handset, it is unsuitable at the darkest end of the Fitzpatrick scale
- Larger window is awkward on the upper lip
Specifications from Ulike product documentation; FDA 510(k) K241998 and K250942, checked 13 October 2026.
No. 2 · Best for speed and safety
Braun Silk-expert Pro 5
Braun · Best for large areas without thinking about settings
125 flashes a minute and both legs in under five minutes, with the SkinPro 2.0 sensor setting intensity for you continuously. Clearance K190354. 6 J/cm2 means more sessions on coarse hair - that is the trade.
The sensor-led handset: it reads skin tone 80 times a second and sets the intensity for you, which is a different design philosophy to maximizing energy.
Specifications
| Energy | Up to 6 J/cm2, brand-stated |
|---|---|
| Flashes | 400,000 |
| Intensity levels | 10, set automatically by SensoAdapt |
| Sensor | SkinPro 2.0 reads skin tone 80 times a second |
| Speed | Up to 125 flashes a minute; both legs in under 5 minutes |
| Clearance | K190354, 18 March 2019, product code OHT |
FDA clearance located
510(k) K190354 (BRAUN Silk.expert Pro 5, cleared 18 March 2019, applicant Cyden Limited, product code OHT).
What works
- A located clearance with a named applicant and date
- The continuous skin-tone sensor is the best safety implementation in the category
- Fastest glide mode here
What does not
- 6 J/cm2 is a quarter of the Ulike figure, so expect more sessions
- Automatic intensity removes the control some users want
- Corded operation on several variants
Specifications from Braun product page; FDA 510(k) K190354, checked 13 October 2026.
No. 3 · Best for unlimited full-body use
SmoothSkin Pure Fit
SmoothSkin · Best for chest, back, shoulders and legs over years
Unlimited flashes removes the lamp-life question entirely, which matters most when you are treating the largest areas on the biggest bodies. Same Cyden sensor lineage as the Braun. Clearances K200184, K213692, K240587.
From Cyden, the same manufacturer behind the Braun Silk-expert line, with unlimited flashes and continuous skin-tone sensing.
Specifications
| Flashes | Unlimited on the Pure line |
|---|---|
| Sensor | Continuous skin-tone sensing, the same lineage as Braun SensoAdapt |
| Clearance | K200184 / K213692 / K240587, product code OHT |
FDA clearance located
Cyden's SmoothSkin clearances on file include K200184 (SmoothSkin Pure, 21 February 2020), K213692 (Pure Mini, 26 January 2022) and K240587 (Pure Unplugged, 29 March 2024), all product code OHT.
What works
- Multiple located clearances from a manufacturer with a long OHT history
- Unlimited flashes removes the lamp-life question entirely
- Same sensor engineering as the Braun handsets
What does not
- Lower brand recognition in the US than Braun or Philips
- No published J/cm2
- Corded on most variants
Specifications from FDA 510(k) K200184, K213692, K240587, checked 13 October 2026.
What to expect
Realistic expectations
- Reduction, not removal. Thinner, slower, patchier regrowth rather than bare skin.
- More sessions on coarse hair, and possibly a higher energy requirement.
- Maintenance indefinitely. Every protocol includes it.
- Nothing on gray hair, which matters more with age and is a real limitation on chest and beard work.
