23.6 against 6
What the energy gap actually means
A four-fold difference in stated J/cm2 is the largest spec gap in this comparison and the easiest to misread.
More energy per pulse disrupts the follicle more effectively, which in practice usually means fewer sessions to the same result, particularly on coarse hair. That is a real benefit and it is the Ulike's main argument.
It also means more heat at the skin surface. That is why the Ulike has sapphire cooling and the Braun does not need it: at 6 J/cm2 there is less heat to manage. The two specifications are not independent - you cannot have the Ulike's energy without the Ulike's cooling, and you do not need the Ulike's cooling at the Braun's energy. Joules explained.
Safety
The sensor is the Braun's whole argument
SkinPro 2.0 reads the skin under the window 80 times a second and adjusts intensity continuously as you move the handset. It detects variation across the body - your inner arm and your shin are not the same tone - and it will not fire at a level it judges unsuitable.
The Ulike gives you ten levels and a compatibility chart. A chart describes a limit; a sensor enforces one. For a buyer near their skin tone's upper boundary, or anyone who might reasonably turn the dial up because progress feels slow, that difference is the single most important thing on this page.
Living with them
Speed and practicality
- Braun is faster per pass: 125 flashes a minute, both legs in under five minutes. Published, specific, and the best speed claim in the category.
- Ulike has a wider window: dual lamps covering an 18% wider area, which offsets some of the flash-rate difference.
- Ulike's cooling genuinely changes the experience at high settings. Thirty minutes of continuous use at 16-18 C contact temperature is the difference between finishing a session and stopping halfway.
- Ulike has 1,000,000 flashes against 400,000. Both vastly exceed a full-body course repeated many times. This specification will never be why you replace either device.
- Braun's US service and recognition are stronger, which matters if something fails.

The sensor-led handset: it reads skin tone 80 times a second and sets the intensity for you, which is a different design philosophy to maximizing energy.

- The continuous skin-tone sensor is the best safety implementation in the category
- Fastest glide mode here
What does not
- 6 J/cm2 is a quarter of the Ulike figure, so expect more sessions
- Automatic intensity removes the control some users want
- Corded operation on several variants

- Highest brand-stated energy density here by a clear margin
- Contact cooling makes high energy levels tolerable, which is the whole point of high energy
What does not
- Energy density is brand-stated and not independently verified
- Like every IPL handset, it is unsuitable at the darkest end of the Fitzpatrick scale
- Larger window is awkward on the upper lip

The decision
Which should you buy
- Braun Silk-expert Pro 5 if you are unsure about your skin tone, buying for someone else, want the fastest passes, or simply do not want to make settings decisions.
- Ulike Air 10 if your skin tone is comfortably within range, your hair is coarse, and you want to finish the course in fewer sessions with cooling that makes high energy tolerable.
- Neither if you are above either device's stated ceiling, or your hair is gray, white, red or very light blonde. Read why.
